In order to have any impact on gas prices Newt would have to dictate to the gas and oil companies that they can not sell their product to other countries that bid a higher price.
This will never happen, and if it did it should be called "Socialism".
Gee is Newt really a Socialist in disguise?

While I don't know if $2.50/gal is feasible, I do believe that if we took the restrictions off oil and gas drilling in the US, the price would come down. Also think he's right about all the attendant benefits it would bring for our country, our work force, our seniors on fixed incomes, our balance of trade. We need more creative ideas like this, folks, so let's not shoot the messenger.

RNCII from Michigan...
May I remind you that the President's name is OBAMA without the bizarre embellishment. You needn't agree with him, in fact that you don't, could make this thread more interesting.
However, as a citizen, you owe the office respect. Just the basic stuff you learned at home and teach your children now. Schoolyard puns belong in the schoolyard.

What a joke. We can drill here all we want, but that has nothing to do with the cost of oil. The speculators will have the price at what ever they want. So they can put the price at $200 a barrel and we could drill all the oil that the world will need and still be paying over $5.00 a gallon. Newt needs to lay off the crack pipe.

Hang on, let me check.
Files for Politics? Got it.
Under Politics; files for Promises - Promises? Got it.
Under Promises, Promises; file for Newt? Nope.
So, I will make a Newt file and add $2.50 gas promise to the folder. Done.
Next?
Good comments WonderfulMI and PDQBlues ;0}

Newt is looking for a new way to get votes. Sounds good, too good to be true or someone else would have already come up with this before now.

"“Under President Obama, because he is so anti American energy, we have actually had a 40 percent reduction in development of oil offshore, and we have had a 40 percent reduction in the development of oil on federal lands."
I'll believe what I read in the Wall Street Journal a great deal more than what Gingrich says or Newsmax reports. Here is from the 8/31/11 Wall Street Journal:
“The figure reflects a huge surge in U.S. oil drilling, up nearly 60% in the past year and the highest total since at least 1987, when oil services company Baker Hughes Inc. began keeping track,” notes the WSJ.

Take OUR oil and gas off the futures market, cap prices, regulate the speculators and develop algae-based bio-fuels.

I was all for Michell Bachmann's $2.00 gas, but Newt's $2.50 gas sounds almost as good.
Anyone who can promise cheap gas when the world market determine the price is MY KIND OF PRESIDENT!. Yeppers, he da man!

Like it or not we live in a global economy. Drilling here alone, will not fix the problem. Settling the middle east down will do its share to help. But that's going to take time if its possible. This is a multi sided problem & attacking all sides at once may be the only way to fix things.

I thought at first that Newt was planning to Drill for Oil at his proposed MOON base.
I see his plan is to Drill our way to Freedom. But Newt doesn't mention how he intends to make the Oil price per barrel in the US cheaper than the price per barrel in the rest of the world.
Nice Pipe Dream there Newt!

There's only one problem. If the plan includes leasing mineral rights on federal land to oil drillers, the drillers still own the oil. The federal government will have to impound the oil, direct its refinement in the USA, and make sure the product is sold for distribution in the USA. And it's going to have to make sure that all of the oil on federal land can profitably extracted to be sold at a refined retail price of $2.50/gal. If the oil companies can't make a profit from federally leased oil wells at $2.50/gal retail, why would they drill?
The Republican mantra is the free market. This is a call for price controls and impounding private property (the extracted oil).
Callista, check on your man: he's got something going on the side with Michele Bachmann.

Build the Keystone XL pipeline that would be a good start. Put the leash back on the EPA would help too Getting rid of the Obama energy policy would also help. Newt could make that happen without a doubt.
